Maternity Classes

The Car-Freshner Center of Women and Children at Samaritan welcomes expectant mothers to learn all the important details about pregnancy, birth and care after the baby is born. This free series is offered every month for moms-to-be and their partners.

The Pregnancy Workshop

The March of Dimes has developed an Early Pregnancy class designed for both first-time and experienced mothers and their partners in the first and second trimester of pregnancy. This national program, taught by trained maternity nurses, is designed to promote optimum newborn outcomes. This class will talk about:

  • Your developing baby and the physical and emotional changes that mom will experience.
  • Hints about the developing baby, nutrition, exercise and preparing for the new arrival.
  • Ways to deal with pregnancy discomforts and warning signs to report to your healthcare provider.

Two-hour class • FREE to everyone • 4:30pm – 6:30pm one Sunday per month.

Co-Sponsored by the Car-Freshner Center of Women and Children at Samaritan, North Country Prenatal Perinatal Council, March of Dimes and Excellus Blue Cross.

The Breastfeeding & Caring for a New Family Classes

We have combined our two most popular classes – Caring for New Families and Breastfeeding – into a two-part course designed to be taken after the first trimester. Feel free to sign up for just one part, but we hope you’ll take both!

Part 1: Breastfeeding Basics – Topics include getting the best start, achieving a good latch, positioning, establishing a good supply, managing common challenges and community resources, choosing a pump, and returning to work. Partners are encouraged to attend.

Part 2: Caring for New Families – Learn about the mother and baby unit at Samaritan Medical Center. Topics include how to care for yourself and your newborn, bathing and diapering, circumcision care, safety, when to call the doctor, the difference between baby blues and postpartum depression, and more. Partners are encouraged to attend.

Classes are free and held online via Zoom from 9 am to 12 pm on Saturdays, once a month.
