Careers

At Samaritan, we recognize the significance of linking our community to educational opportunities designed to give local students a first-hand look at the healthcare field. That’s why Samaritan has partnered with local high-schools, Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES), Jefferson Community College, Fort Drum Regional Health Planning Organization (FDRHPO) and numerous SUNY and private colleges to offer partnerships that promote healthcare careers and provide students with a variety of valuable experiences.

When students can shadow healthcare professionals or complete college internships at Samaritan Health, we are proud to play a role in forming the future healthcare providers of this community.

New Vision Health Careers

The Jefferson-Lewis BOCES New Vision Health Careers program is designed for high school seniors with an interest in the medical profession. This hands-on learning experience is guided by professionals in real-world settings during an intensive one-year, honors-level course for focused students driven to succeed. Students work directly with and observe experienced healthcare professionals at a modern medical facility delivering quality care to patients. The program starts with four weeks of introductory class work after which students begin rotations at Samaritan Medical Center and other local hospitals closest to the students.

New Vision students spend between one day and two weeks in each of the program’s 57 hospital rotations interacting with patients, doctors, nurses, administrators and other professionals. Students see all aspects of the hospital operation, from emergency care and rehabilitation services to information technology and business management.

A student applying for New Vision Health Careers must be a senior who has:

  • An interest in the medical field
  • Demonstrated maturity to work independently and in teams
  • Completed three years of math and science
  • A strong attendance and academic record
  • Plans to attend college or other post-secondary education
  • Recommendations from a teacher and a community leader

Please see the New Vision program brochure for further information.

MASH Camp

MASH Camp—which stands for Medical Academy of Science and Health – is a unique opportunity for local middle and high school students to experience the healthcare world in an interactive way. Students are able to evaluate a variety of careers over three full-day sessions, then learn about additional job shadow and school-sponsored opportunities.

MASH Camps are sponsored by Fort Drum Regional Health Planning Organization (FDRHPO), and Samaritan is proud to serve as one of four hospitals hosting 20-25 students in the Summer Camp and 10-15 for the Winter Camp. Past camps have included a 2-3 hour session in each department – Respiratory, Radiology, Laboratory, Biomedical and Emergency Departments – over the three days, plus CPR instruction.

For more information and to apply for the program visit the MASH Camp page.
