Thoracic Surgery

Samaritan is committed to offering a full array of surgical services for our Northern New York and Fort Drum communities. Thoracic Surgery focuses on the diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases of the chest (thorax), including the lungs, thymus, esophagus, lymph nodes, pericardium and pleura.

    Our Thoracic surgeon treats a variety of conditions including the following:

    • Lung cancer
    • Metastatic cancer from other organs
    • Surgical complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
    • Infections of the chest cavity
    • Fluid collections of the chest cavity
    • Pericardial fluid collections and tamponade
    • Thymic tumors
    • Neurogenic chest tumors
    • Achalasia
    • Thoracic vascular access
    • Chest trauma
  • What common procedures do your surgeons perform? Close

    Some of the most common general Thoracic procedures:

    • Lung resection – removing a portion of the lung (lobectomy) or the whole lung (pneumonectomy)
    • Mediastinoscopy (diagnostic procedure on lymph nodes in the chest)
    • Minimally invasive video assisted thoracic surgery (VATS)
    • Pleurodesis (for recurring fluid collections and air leaks)
