What is Pulmonary Rehabilitation? Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a personalized exercise and education program that provides information and support to individuals living with a chronic lung disorder. Who might benefit from Pulmonary Rehabilitation? An individual whose chronic lung disorder is affecting his/her quality of life may benefit from Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or emphysema are frequently seen in Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Individuals with other chronic lung disorders may also benefit from Pulmonary Rehabilitation. These disorders may include the following: • asthma • chronic bronchitis • pulmonary fibrosis
How does Pulmonary Rehabilitation help? Participants in Pulmonary Rehabilitation learn to help themselves by taking charge of their healthcare. Classes are led by a team of healthcare professionals who provide the participants with personalized education regarding the benefits of exercise, diet, medications, and how to handle the day-to-day challenges of living with a chronic lung disorder.
Exercise can improve the way the body utilizes oxygen, thus decreasing fatigue. Exercise has also been shown to help decrease depression. Pulmonary Rehabilitation participants tend to have fewer hospitalizations because they have learned to manage their disease effectively. How can I participate? • In order to participate, you will need your doctor’s permission and a recent physical, including a pulmonary function test. If the results of your pulmonary function test meet certain criteria, Medicare or other insurance companies may cover part of or the entire cost of the program.
• You must currently be a non-smoker. If you still smoke and need help quitting, we offer smoking cessation counseling.
